Falmouth’s Foundation students celebrate a year of creativity in End of Year show

21.05.10

The End of Year show by University College Falmouth’s Foundation Studies in Art, Design & Media Diploma marks the culmination of thirty weeks of experimentation, discovery and challenge and introduces us to students who have learnt the fundamental skills required to become successful artists, designers, makers or media practitioners.

Throughout the year, the students have learnt much about themselves, their individual styles, personalities and strengths and have grown in independence, confidence and skill.  The year has been a colourful, creative journey leading them to their own specialist art, design or media destination.

This show is not only very visual, but it is also teeming with provoking, creative and contemporary ideas.  Once again, UCF’s Foundation students will show us their take on the world, their views on cutting edge and every day themes, and their creative approach to visual issues.

As alternative thinkers, problem solvers and challengers, their talent has grown throughout the year and the work shows without doubt that there are many who will be successful, dynamic creatives in the future.

The work on show will leave you pensive, amuse you, allow you to lose yourself, inspire you, and always challenge the status quo, but one thing will be certain – you will be witness to the start of some terrific, emerging talents who in time, will become important artists in their chosen field.

“Each exhibitor will be invigilating the show on different days, so you will be able to meet them and talk to them about their work,” explains Course Leader, Phil Naylor.  “This is an opportunity to catch a generation of artists and designers in the making, so I would encourage you to see this work while these exceptional young people are still available for comment.”

"The broadness of the Foundation course allows you to experiment in your own unique ways, opening up many opportunities for the future,” adds Georgia Gendall, whose work will be included in this celebratory show.  “The atmosphere is exciting and inspiring – a year's not long enough!"

The students have been successful in applying for a wide range of art, design and media undergraduate courses including graphic design, fashion design, illustration, textiles, architecture and environmental design courses, printmaking, fine art, theatre design, photography and film – many choosing to continue their studies at University College Falmouth.

The Foundation End of Year Show at University College Falmouth’s Wellington Terrace Annexe and The Poly in Church Street will be open to the public from Friday 28 to Thursday 3 June (except for Sunday 30 May), from 10am to 4pm.  Admission is free.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name.  It has two campuses in Cornwall – at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth’s expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington’s expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.  The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2013/2014 that will be unique to the South West.

The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
