Cornish Crabbers at the Southampton Boat Show
14.09.09
A Cornwall based boat builder celebrated at the Southampton Boat Show after becoming one of the first companies to receive a £150,000 investment. Cornish Crabbers, based at Rock, has received £150,000 from the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Convergence Programme, making it one of the first to be approved under the national Grant for Business Investment (GBI) programme.
The money supplements a total £703,000 investment being undertaken by Cornish Crabbers LLP. The funding has been planned to enable the company to buy its existing premises at Rock, and improve working facilities with new equipment, and enhanced staff conditions.
The ERDF investment will also enable the company to purchase photovoltaic cells to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. The total investment will safeguard existing jobs and help to grow employment at the company to a team of 32 staff by 2013.
Cornish Crabbers, which has a 30 year pedigree in boat design and manufacture, came under new management in January 2009 after a Cornish Crabber owner “liked the product so much he bought the company”.
Philip Langsdale is now chairman of the progressive boat manufacturer which boasts a strong order book. The company is building the best loved models from the original Cornish crabber range at affordable prices and within accessible build times.
One of the other key factors to the company’s current success is residual value. Cornish Crabbers are aware that owners can keep their boats for around three years and commonly get back what they paid for it.
Southampton Boat Show was a chance for prospective new owners to admire the traditional lines of the Crabber range and appreciate the obvious build quality. It was also a chance for long term admirers to get their hands on a boat!
In the past demand has outstripped supply for a number of the models – the boating equivalent of the “Morgan” factor. But, with the approved inward investment, the company can now double their production, opening up the opportunity for more customers to purchase from the range. The investment and restructuring will also mean expanded facilities in Rock, the home of Cornish Crabbers, for owner’s storage, maintenance and repair.
